
Beneath the Smokestacks: Heydays of Iron Founding
More than 5,000 years old and fundamentally little change in process, the metal casting industry in North America has undergone continuous deflation since the early 1900's, peaking briefly during World War II, but by 1962 accounting for 5,000 individual foundries of which only 1,800 remain today.
The typical US foundry remains family owned and employs fewer than 40 people with turnover of $5-10mm annually.
